SHARING TRAVEL STORIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Last week here in Denmark, it was fall break. You may know it as half-term. The Danes call it efterårsferie. It is a fantastisk time to travel. That’s Danish for fantastic. Summer crowds are gone. Temperatures are milder. Prices usually more reasonable. This year, we hosted a visit from my mom who flew in from around the world.
When she comes this way, we like to show her another part of Scandinavia so last week we made our way across Denmark to the west coast. A little over three hour drive straight west from Copenhagen takes you to the oldest town in Denmark, Ribe. We strolled the medieval city and climbed to the top of the cathedral for views over the town and out to the Wadden Sea National Park, Denmark’s largest.
A UNESCO World Heritage site that spans three countries, the Wadden Sea is the largest intertidal ecosystem in the world. We spent two days learning and exploring more from the tiny Danish island of Rømø, thirty minutes from Ribe. If you have the chance, I highly recommend a visit. Beautiful heathered hillocks spread into huge expanses of wide sandy beach or gooey mudflats where you can pick oysters fresh from the sea. Today I’m sharing some about our oyster tour on the island. It was educational AND delicious.
