FORTY-FIVE WEEKS OF SHARING TRAVEL STORIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Hurricanes, wildfires, flooding, tsunamis, earthquakes. What happens when your travel plans are in a zone of potential natural disaster? Do you take it into consideration when planning? Booking outside monsoon months. Paying attention to Hurricane season. Being aware when rolling through Tornado Alley or taking note of tsunami evacuation routes?
What if you live in one of these areas? My social media feeds have been full of red flames and fire ravaged hillsides this week from wildfires devastating the State of Oregon where I am from. Before it was family and friends in Houston with shocking images of flooding. I am worried about those tiny Caribbean nations in the path of Irma, will their infrastructure and emergency responses be able to cope with 175 mile an hour winds. I have fingers crossed that my family on the Eastern Seaboard stays safe as the huge storm makes its way north.
And once the devastation has been wreaked, what responsibility as a traveler do you have to assist the areas affected? Have you ever sought out a place in the wake of a tragedy to visit specifically? Or in reverse, because a place you visited was damaged, do you try to help. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Have your travels been impacted by storms or disasters?
Sending wishes for some rain and wind to the Pacific Northwest as well as dry calm thoughts to the Southeast and a huge vacuum to Houston. Sigh.
So. I’m needing a little inspiration. Where will you take us this week? Somewhere beautiful and cultural and creative? I’m in. But first – let’s high five my favorites from last week’s link up!
Faraway Files Favorites Week #44
Have you been to Peru? Machu Picchu on your wishlist? Mine too. Bea from BeaTraveling showed us why checking it out Peru’s icon on solo travel might be the way to go. Great tips Bea! Thanks for sharing!
Jenny and Jason and crew of TraveLynn Family showed us Sri Lanka and all it offers all as the perfect place to take your littles. Mine aren’t so little anymore, but I’m sold – what a beautiful, colorful and cultural place. I also appreciate their immersive and sustainable approach to meet, see and eat up the culture here. What a lovely way to travel.
And then because the topic is so timely and important, I chose this post from Christine over at A Family Day Out. She tests the troubles with #overtourism in Skye and has some ideas about how to avoid the crowds and thoughts how to help.
I’m sharing some sites and tastes from my current city Copenhagen, whose only natural disaster was this summer. Ha. Just kidding. Kind of. But it was the coldest, wettest summer in recent records apparently. Don’t worry. I’m already booking October break to somewhere sunny! Let’s link up! Cheers from Copenhagen, Erin
FARAWAY FILES TRAVEL BLOG COMMUNITY LINKUP #44
WANT TO JOIN IN?
Jump in! The water is fine! Faraway Files is a creative community of travel bloggers who inspire and share each other’s posts. All participating hosts will read and comment on every post that participates in the spirit of the link up. We will also share them on social media too. Each week we’ll choose our favorites and highlight them on our blogs and social media channels using #FarawayFiles.
As Faraway Files hosts, Katy, Clare and I love our link up and this supportive travel community. With over 130 contributors, we have read about 80 countries and territories around the world. If you join in and leave a link please reciprocate and comment on the hosts’ posts as well as at least two others that spark an interest. If we see a pattern of people not joining in, sadly we have decided to remove the links of those posters in the future.
HOW IT WORKS:
- Link up one travel-related post and add the Faraway Files badge onto the post or your blog (code below) or link back to the hosts.
- The link up will go live every Thursday at 8 am UK time (9 am, CET) until midnight on Friday. It will alternate between Untold Morsels, Suitcases and Sandcastles, and Oregon Girl around the World.
- Link ups work best if everyone shares so please comment on all three of the hosts’ posts and at least two others.
