FORTY-THREE WEEKS OF SHARING TRAVEL STORIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD
2017 is the United Nation’s International Year of Sustainable Tourism Development. The World Tourism Organization has just launched a new campaign called Travel. Enjoy. Respect. It aims to encourage us, as the tourists and travelers around the world, to be the catalyst for positive change and impacts in this growing industry. But how can you help? UNWTO offers these tips to consider while traveling:
- Be an informed traveler.
-
Support the local economy.
-
Protect our planet.
-
Honor your hosts and our common heritage.
-
Be a respectful traveler.
Learn more and join the movement here. Travel. Enjoy. Respect.
I am always trying to find ways to make sure our travel choices include businesses that are making positive impacts on the environment and local economies. If you’ve been following me, you know we spent our summer holidays in Northern Norway. Today, I’m sharing our summer glamping safari with WildSeas Adventures, who are dedicated to marine mammal conservation and education. In a country that still offers whale on the menu, the work they do is meaningful and impactful. And the setting is stunning. Come take a look.
But before we get to the link up, I want to share my favorites from last week. There were so many great posts and we appreciate all who shared theirs!
Faraway Files Favorites Week #42
Loved this post by Lisa from Baby Loves Travel advocating for taking it slow while traveling with your toddler in tow. With views like this, I could get behind doing nothing with or without my little along!

Esther from Your Dutch Guide shares all things lovely in the Netherlands and beyond. Last week she shared the beautiful message, history and purpose of the Peace Palace located in the Hague.

Ahila from Perspectives Quilt took us to the Hawaiian Island of Oahu and showed us there is so much more to explore than world famous Waikiki Beach. I appreciated her focus on the island’s conservation practices in the nature preserves. We’d all love to see sea turtles in the wild right?

FARAWAY FILES TRAVEL BLOG COMMUNITY LINKUP #43
WANT TO JOIN IN?
Jump in! The water is fine! Faraway Files is a creative community of travel bloggers who inspire and share each other’s posts. All participating hosts will read and comment on every post that participates in the spirit of the link up. We will also share them on social media too. Each week we’ll choose our favorites and highlight them on our blogs and social media channels using #FarawayFiles.
As Faraway Files hosts, Katy, Clare and I love our link up and this supportive travel community. With over 130 contributors, we have read about 80 countries and territories around the world. If you join in and leave a link please reciprocate and comment on the hosts’ posts as well as at least two others that spark an interest. If we see a pattern of people not joining in, sadly we have decided to remove the links of those posters in the future.
HOW IT WORKS:
- Link up one travel-related post and add the Faraway Files badge onto the post or your blog (code below) or link back to the hosts.
- The link up will go live every Thursday at 8 am UK time (9 am, CET) until midnight on Friday. It will alternate between Untold Morsels, Suitcases and Sandcastles, and Oregon Girl around the World.
- Link ups work best if everyone shares so please comment on all three of the hosts’ posts and at least two others.

Wow, you featured me. Thank you!!! A great start to my Thursday 🙂
I loved the post Esther! Such a beautiful and inspiring place that I may not have considered visiting, but now want to seek it out! Happy Thursday from Copenhagen!

Many thanks, Erin, for featuring my post on Oahu island. I miss the link up frequently, because I am usually back home on saturdays and by then, like today, the link up is closed. So, will try to join in another future one. In the meantime, have a lovely weekend!
No worries Ahila! We love having you join when you can make it! Cheers from Copenhagen, Erin
I completely agree with your list, Erin! What methods do you use to be an informed traveler?
It’s hard when eco standards are not always the same across the world and sometimes business greenwash to attract customers. I just try to be thorough when booking and ask questions of accommodation and tour providers. Do you have any special ways you make sure you are being sustainable when traveling?
