Spring in Copenhagen | Where to Find the Flowers

Spring is Springing in the Danish Capital

Daffodils, tulips and cherry blossoms are Blooming again

(Originally posted 2018, updated March 2022)

Get your cameras ready. Spring in Copenhagen is truly beautiful. Especially on a sunny bluebird day like today. And if you live here, you’ve earned it. While winter may be dark and full of hygge, spring in Denmark is worth the wait. And it is definitely springing. Right now. Get outside and soak up some sun and see the blossoms and buds bursting open all over town. And while we get ready for the pretty in pink popularity of the coming pop of cherry trees, the daffodils, tulips, and hyacinth are here and happy to help with your fix of flowerful color.

Here are my favorites places to while away the hours smelling all the flowers when here in Copenhagen.

1 | Bispebjerg Cemetary | Kirsebærallé i Bisbebjerg Kirkegård

Probably the most popular place in the greater Copenhagen area to see spring blooms is the cherry tree alley in Bisbebjerg Cemetary. A canopy of pink pastel blooms creates a flower-festooned tunnel that beckons to thousands and thousands of visitors every year. And for good reason. The “Accolade” cherry tree varietal planted behind the Søndre Kapel afford fluffy pink petals and it is really, really pretty. But be warned. It is packed with people when the blossoms are at their peak – expect then mid to late April. Over 100,000 visitors come to swoon each year. Make sure to stay on the path and be respectful that this is still a cemetery.

Frederiksborgvej 125, 2400 København
Open | 07:00 – 22:00 in April and through the summer

2 | Langelinie Park | Sakura Festival

Another popular spot to spy the pretty pink kirsebærtræer, cherry trees, is along the Copenhagen waterfront in Langelinie Park. Near the iconic Little Mermaid statue sits a tree-lined pip of a park that hosts the annual Sakura Festival in Copenhagen each year. The 200 Japanese Sakura trees that you see here now were a gift from Mr. Seiichi Takaki, Honorary Consul to Denmark in Hiroshima¹  to celebrate the 200th birthday of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen in 2005.

Good news, the annual Sakura festival is back for 2022. Details about the event currently in the works. The Japanese Embassy of Denmark organizes two days of celebrating the pink blooms and Japanese culture in the park every April. Past years have presented martial arts demonstrations, kimono fashion shows, and tea ceremonies. Even if you can’t make the festival, it’s a still work a peek at the trees.

3 | King’s Garden | Kongens Have

Don’t care to cure your spring fever shoulder to shoulder with the throngs and masses? No worries. Head to the King’s Garden or Kongens Have in Danish. Here, spring begins with a royal purple carpet that rolls right out from the front gates of the Rosenborg Castle. Catch it in mid-late March. Missed it this season? The blooms continue once the crocuses have come and gone, soon the garden will swell with swoon-worthy flowering trees.

4 | Copenhagen Botanical Garden | Botanisk Have

Step into the Botanical Garden and stop for a coffee in the sun. Wander the paths or bring a picnic with views of the flowers unfolding. Here  – it’s the tulip trees and rhodendron that shine.

Botanical Garden
Øster Farimagsgade 2C, 1353 København
OPEN: 08:30 – 18:00 (from 1 April to 30 September, closes at 16:00 rest of the year)
Free to the Public, but tickets required to enter the Palmehuset.

5 | Ørstedsparken

When the sun shines, you are sure to find people flocking to Torvehallerne market to snag some snacks and drinks and one of the limited outdoor picnic tables. Step across the street and head past Israel Plads to the serene setting of Ørstedsparken. Set below the street, this little urban oasis is just starting to sing its sweet spring colors. Daffodils and some flowering buds on the trees line the paths. Pick a bench, any bench, and enjoy the scene. A small café – Flindt & Ørsted – sits at the park’s corner at

6 | Islands Brygge

Not quite time for a dip in the harbor bath at Islands Brygge, spring is the season for flowers and flea markets on this side of the Copenhagen canal. Another perfect place for a picnic and people spotting on the lawn under the blooms.

7 | Frederiksberg Garden | Frederiksberg Have

Purple blooms carpet the bulb fields at Frederiksberg Have come early April. Remember to admire from the path. Step in the almost secret space of the Garden Society Garden – through the arch at the left corner of Frederiksberg Runddel to find charming corners with benches and gazebos for a perfect spring picnic. Here hellebores and rhododendron begin right after the Easter daffodils and crocus show. Soon magnolia trees and cherry trees will pop open.

8 | Amalie Garden | Amaliehaven

Another of the city’s secret little gardens is Amaliehaven that most people miss when down near the Palace for the changing of the guard. A little oasis set back from the promenade along the canal with a huge water fountain splitting the middle.

Often a little coffee cart tuktuk sets up shop on the corner with views across to the Copenhagen Opera House. Grab a cup and cozy up on a bench behind the tall hedges amid the blooms.

9 | Tivoli Gardens Amusement Park

To many in the Danish capital, the epitome of a spring fling flocked with flowers can be found in the iconic Tivoli Gardens Amusement Park. 2018 was the 175th anniversary of the 2nd oldest amusement park in the world.  If you haven’t seen Tivoli Gardens, spring is the perfect time to visit. I remember sitting in the King’s Garden at Easter when we were in Copenhagen. It must have been an early Easter or a late one as I can’t remember any blossom but I do remember a lot of flowers in Tivoli.
The blossom is coming through this week in our garden and it’s warm! So lovely to see.

Before this spring I would have said Autumn was my favorite season in Copenhagen for sure, but this spring has been so excellent!

  7. What an abundance of blooms after a long winter! I thought the pink blossoms were my favorite until I saw the deep purple tulips. Against the bright yellow ones. Wow!
