The Coziest Places to Get Caffeinated in the Danish Capital

I love coffee. It’s true. I do. And lucky for me (and you!) there is an incredible coffee culture here in Copenhagen. Come to Copenhagen, she said. Danes definitely know how to brew a delicious cup. And while I will never turn down a date to seek out a new source for a cuppa joe, the places I’ve shared here are my favorites. For now.

But what makes me giddy beyond a simple cup of caffeinated bean juice? An adorable place to enjoy it. A coffee here is expensive so when the place itself becomes part of the experience, it’s worth it to plant for a bit to soak it up while you sip. It’s also more sustainable. No wasted cup to trash. Time out for you, better for the environment. Win. And win. To make it on my favorite coffee house list, you must have :

A | Good coffee. Duh. Bonus points for sustainably sourced, fair trade beans.
B | Good atmosphere. Bonus points for uniqueness, design, decor and candles.
C | Good service. I know – this can be controversial in Copenhagen. Service isn’t job one here. But if it’s really bad, you didn’t make my list. Don’t take yourself so seriously. It’s coffee. We all want a cup.

10 Coziest Places to Get Coffee in Copenhagen

1 | Andersen & Maillard

This unassuming spot is almost easy to miss on your way up vibrant and colorful Nørrebrogade. But don’t. Miss it that is. It would be a mistake. Andersen & Maillard, a stone’s throw from Assisten’s Kirkegaard, is a double threat. A damn fine coffee roastery plus a damn good pastry place. You must try the almond croissants. Seriously sinful and perfect with your cup of house coffee. Scandi minimal meets jungalow and simple design inside with tables to take your coffee out when the sun is shining. Slurp it down. Soak it up.

3 | Ipsen & Co

No Copenhagen coffee list would be complete for me without the inclusion of Ipsen & Co on Gammel Kongevej in Frederiksberg. It captured my heart on my very first visit to the city nearly five years ago. I take everyone I can here at least once. The café itself is small and cozy and serves their coffee in the cutest coordinated Danish Bloomingville cups. Try the brunch plate or the skyr with muesli (my favorite made wiith a nutty, crunchy oaty goodness plus a house-made seasonal compote of sea buckthorn or rhubarb. Yum.) Or take your coffee outside from the most adorable take-out window in town. Just bring your reusable cup!

4 | Kaffestuen

Funky and fun, this coffee shop in Østerbro offers an eclectic setting and organic fare. Check out the back room with mismatched furniture and fun art on the walls.

5 | Original Coffee

Original Coffee is my OG coffee house. Many a day did I sit inside their first shop near Trianglen and absorb my new Danish life. Darn good coffee and now a plethora of shops around town to choose from. I love taking visitors to the one at the top of Illum Department store and sit at the corner above pretty Amagertorv. No places here to take in the view outside? Head to the opposite corner of Illum and try the annex one there. More spots on the balcony, amazingly protected from the wind. Or sit outside with views of the Lakes on the Sorterdam Dossering near Dronning Louises Bro. Always action happening here. Hungry? Try Original Coffee‘s morgen komplet brunch plate, a relative bargain at 49 DKK.  I also love their avocado mad, a Danish version of avocado toast on dense chewy rye bread with pickled red onion and a yummy pesto. With more than one location, I’ve put *asterisks to indicate their coziest locations.

6 | Paludan Bog & Café

This is my nearly teen daughter’s new favorite and I can understand why. While the coffee might not be the best in town, the atmosphere wins in this university area favorite. Grab a table in one of the cozy nooks lined with vintage books. Popular with students from near and from far, you’ll hear a bevy of languages in this book café.

8 | HOTEL SANDERS

Also not a coffee house per se, the newish Hotel Sanders is still one of the coziest places to take a coffee. Upscale hotel near the Gamle Scene of the Royal Theater, you don’t have to be a guest to soak up the ambiance inside. From the Parisian sidewalk café chairs outside to the plush couches near the fireplace in the lobby, there is something decadent and different about the vibe here. But for something truly special, step upstairs to the rooftop terrace and take your coffee or brunch up top. Pretty mosaic tables and warm wooden rattan chairs make it a little oasis in the city.

9 | Sonny

In the center of the city sits Sonny, a slick little coffee shop with style. Serving single origin and organic coffees from Aarhus roasters La Cabra and Swedish roasters Koppi, you will get a lovely cup here. Brunch is delicious and instagram worthy as well.

10 | The Coffee Collective

The Coffee Collective has become a local institution with shops all about town. But you can’t call the collective a chain just yet. No quality lost with expansion in locations. More about the brew, than the sweets or eats, Coffee Collective is just good coffee. And with positive impact, they are committed to enhancing the lives of coffee farmers they source from. I love taking a cup to stay outside to the tables at Torvehallerne market and people watching. My kind of hygge and happy when I don’t have company to share with. Even when I do. For a completely different look, try the newest location on Kristin Bernikows Gade near the shopping center Strøget and not far from Magasin.
